Top STEM students from Brockenhurst College had their academic efforts recognised and celebrated at the College’s STEM Awards ceremony. Winners were rewarded with certificates and cash prizes for their dedication, commitment and hard work across the full range of STEM subjects. STEM is the collective name given to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects.
Gold and silver awards were presented at the College’s Kemball Theatre in thirty-one categories across the College’s entire STEM learning provision. The twilight event was sponsored by local industry partners, Fawley-based GEO Specialty Chemicals and Lymington-based Bridgeworks. Former Brock student Jess Martin, who now works for GEO as a graduate chemist, gave a talk detailing her tips for STEM study success before the presentations.
Among the most anticipated awards of the night was STEM Student of the Year, which went to Matthew Dyson from Lymington, who studies Computer Science, Maths, Physics and Electronics. He was chosen for his outstanding achievement across all his subjects, with teachers also citing his overall keenness and full and thoughtful answers to questions in class.
Graham Dunkley from GEO and David Trossell from Bridgeworks presented the awards, along with £100 for gold and £50 for silver. Also in attendance were special guests John and Marion Greenwood from Lyndhurst, who recently established the College’s Greenwood Bursary, which is awarded to a Brockenhurst College STEM student each year.
The bursary pays for a student who faces financial hardship to study a STEM-related university degree and covers their entire tuition fees for three years of their course. STEM Student of the Year Matthew Dyson said: “I’m delighted to have received all three of my awards and I’m so grateful to my teachers for their support and guidance. “I thoroughly enjoy being at Brock, and I can’t wait to study STEM at a higher level in the future,” he added.
David Trossell, CEO and CTO of Lymington’s Bridgeworks, said: “Bridgeworks is honoured to support the Brockenhurst College STEM Awards.
“We continue to support and encourage younger generations to be at the forefront of engineering developments, as well as to explore exciting career opportunities within the STEM field.”
Meanwhile, Assistant Principal Ann Johnson said: “I would like to congratulate all the students who won awards tonight, and also thank our sponsors, GEO Specialty Chemicals and Bridgeworks, for their pivotal support, without which we could not stage this incredible awards ceremony.”
